The mechanical keyboard has limitations, and the massive and heavy Titan is louder than most competitors. Given its cost, one would expect greater refinement.

In terms of design, the Titan’s lids are finished with a sleek black metallic coating, giving it a stylish and modern appearance. The interiors of the laptop share the same finish, creating a cohesive and cohesive aesthetic. Despite the attractive design, it’s worth noting that the build quality of the Titan is not quite as robust as other popular gaming laptops like Razer’s Blade 18 or ASUS’s Scar 18.
The MSI Titan GT77 has a sturdy build quality, with only a slight bend noticeable on the keyboard and cover. The laptop can be easily opened with just one finger, indicating its solid construction. Additionally, the Titan is deeper than most laptops due to the large radiator positioned at the back. MSI has smartly placed the thinnest point at the front, making the laptop appear slimmer than it actually is. However, closer to the back, the joint is approximately 3.5 cm or 1. inch.
The laptop on its own weighs just over 3.5 kg or 7.7 lbs, but when paired with the 330-watt brick, the weight increases to almost 0.9 kg or 10.9 lbs, making it a bit heavy. It’s important to note that the included charger is significantly larger compared to other brands’ 330-watt options. However, this may not be a concern if the laptop is used primarily as a desktop replacement.
Above the screen is a 720p camera, which comes with a privacy hatch in the middle, and has IR for Windows Hello Face Unlock. The mechanical keyboard uses Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile Switches, and it comes back in RGB. It also has a customizable RGB backlight, and all keys and additional functions light up. The touchpad feels nice and smooth and works well, and it’s also a bit bigger than last year’s model. There is a fingerprint sensor on the right side of the touchpad, which works quickly and accurately. The laptop also has two speakers and two woofers below them. Tannoy becomes loud and low sounds, but they are not quite clear and completely as good as Razer’s Blade 18 or ASUS’ Scar 18.
On the left side of the laptop, there is the rear power supply, two ports USB 3.2 Gen 2, an SD card slot, and a 3.5 mm audio combined slot. On the right side, there is the third USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, two Thunderbolt Type-C ports, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1, and 2.5 gigabit Ethernet. The type-C port closest to the back can be used to charge a laptop up to 100 watts, which is a hallmark of last year’s Titan. Neither Type-C port offers DisplayPort, however, both support Mini DisplayPort and the HDMI ports are connected directly to Nvidia graphics regardless of whether Optimus is on or off.

The MSI Titan still features a 17.3-inch 4K screen, similar to last year, but with an upgrade from 120hz to 144hz and now Mini-LED. However, it did not adopt the 16:10 trend due to the same framework as last year. Unfortunately, there are no advanced optimal except for a mux switch, which requires a restart when changing Optimus on or off in the MSI Center software. G-Sync is also missing, which is a bit disappointing for such a high-quality product. However, adaptive sync can be used when Optimus is enabled. The color selection is more than good for a gaming laptop, but it falls short compared to other Mini LED panels like the Razer Blade 16.
The screen’s average gray-to-gray response time was less than 9.5 ms, and object offsets from lighter to darker were usually pretty good. The screen’s response time was shorter than the ASUS Zephyrus Duo 16 and Flow X16, but Razer’s Blade 16 was significantly faster than the Titan. The system delay is the time between a mouse click and a stroke displayed on the screen in CS: GO, and the Titan’s screen response time was not amazing in all scenarios. However, it performed decently in comparison to other devices, and slower response times were observed during the five transitions in the CS: GO test, where dark-to-light transitions were slower.
RAM, Storage, and Battery
The Titan gaming computer is unique and stands out from other laptops because it has memory slots that can support up to 128 GB of memory. However, by default, the memory works at DDR5-3600, which is the Intel HX platform limit. The Titan comes with two DDR5-800 32 GB memory modules installed, and both run at DDR5-1000 by default. It is possible to go into the BIOS and change the value to DDR5-800, but the first startup may take more than 5 minutes. The Titan has two 2TB SSDs in RAID 0, giving a total of 4TB and some of the fastest speeds ever seen in any laptop. However, the SD card speed is not amazing, with a maximum speed of 250 MB/s, and the card lacks a latch and locking mechanism.
The Titan has a reasonable Wi-Fi speed, and there are still three M.2 mounting holes on both sides for SSDs and four memory slots that give it more upgradeability than most other laptops. The Titan has the maximum possible power of a 99.9 Wh battery, but battery life is not amazing, lasting only around 3 hours and 1 minute in a YouTube gaming test. The MSI Center software has a super-battery performance mode and a screen power saver option that reduces the screen refresh rate up to 60 Hz when you unplug the charger.
Moving on, let’s discuss the cooling system. The Titan comes with four fans and plenty of CPU and GPU coverage heat pipes, with an additional one compared to last year’s model. MSI uses a phase change thermal pad and liquid metal in both CPU and GPU. There are many holes directly above the suction fans, and air also enters from the part that sticks out from the back, which extends from the bottom of the screen to the top of the keyboard. Air is released from both the left and right side and the entire back section, so there are no ports there. The MSI Center software allows you to change between different game modes, from calm to balanced to extreme. The Extreme Performance Mode boosts the GPU but has no overclocking by default, as we tested. We can also adjust the fans in advanced mode and set them to maximum speed.
Indoor temperatures were cool when the laptop was idle, and during the worst-case scenario load tests, the GPU was thermally throttled and reached Nvidia’s limit of 87 degrees Celsius in silent mode. However, the purpose of this mode is to run quietly. The balance and extreme modes were reasonable and setting the fans to maximum speed could lower the temperatures by another 3 degrees, but at the cost of fan noise. Using a cooling pad could lower temperatures more effectively than adjusting the fans to full speed, but even with the lid closed, the Titan remained relatively cool, even under heavy load. The clock frequencies achieved in the same stress tests did not differ much between different cooling methods, as the heat was not the limiting factor. It was not an equilibrium state and far from an extreme state.
The RTX 4090 graphics card is capable of running at a maximum power limit of 175 watts with dynamic gain. However, during testing, it was found that the processor was also loaded and ran closer to 170 watts, which is an excellent result. It is worth noting that the CPU only used about 7 watts, which is a very high score considering the workload of the GPU. Despite the quiet room being stiflingly hot, the GPU still runs at over 130 watts. Nevertheless, even if a game is played in 4K resolution, the room can still offer a decent level of activity while running much quieter compared to higher-end rooms.

The question of whether the Titan laptop is worth buying depends on the individual’s needs and preferences. In my opinion, it is only worth it for enthusiasts who enjoy overclocking and tuning their machines to achieve the best possible performance. Additionally, if you need a laptop with lots of RAM and SSD slots, then the Titan is a good choice as not many laptops offer such features. The Titan has excellent cooling potential with its fully unlocked BIOS and outperforms ASUS’s cheaper Scar 18 in straight out-of-the-box tests, despite the Titan being capable of sustaining higher combined CPU and GPU power levels. It seems that MSI has done a better job of tuning the Titan out of the box, and the pricing of the laptop is something to look forward to.
The ASUS Scar 18, on the other hand, has fewer fans, less advanced optimization, and G-Sync, speakers with inferior sound, and a less appealing design. While the Titan is an excellent performer and can run all games smoothly at 4K resolution, I found that it is not the best in terms of raw performance right out of the box. Moreover, for those who don’t require the advanced features offered by the Titan, spending $4,000-$5,000 on a laptop that doesn’t have improved Optimus and G-Sync may not be worth it. However, MSI’s GE series is catching up and will offer 1080p cameras in 2023, along with a privacy shutter and Type C charging.
