Design and Display

The iPhone XS lacked a revolutionary design compared to its predecessor, the iPhone X. However, it did possess some attractive qualities. Its 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display provided a visually pleasing display. The notch at the top added a unique touch, while the curved glass sides gave it a premium feel. The lightning port at the bottom and the glass back with the iconic Apple logo further enhanced its overall aesthetic appeal. Moreover, the iPhone XS came with IP certification, wireless charging capabilities, and a dual camera setup, making it a capable device.

Although the iPhone XS didn’t introduce any groundbreaking changes from the iPhone X, it did offer internal improvements. The phone’s performance was commendable, thanks to the upgrades under the hood. While it may not have been a significant upgrade for iPhone X users, the iPhone XS still had a lot to offer. Its sleek design, combined with its impressive features, made it an appealing choice. Despite its similar appearance, the iPhone XS delivered a satisfying user experience.

Camera Capabilities

The camera configuration on this phone is rather intriguing. It features a dual camera setup at the rear, comprising a 12-megapixel wide lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. Additionally, there is a 7-megapixel standard camera located at the front. The rear camera can capture 4K 60fps videos, while the front camera can shoot 1080p 60fps videos.

Overall, it is a commendable camera, especially when compared to previous Apple cameras. However, it falls short in comparison to the superior camera of the iPhone 11, which makes it appear less impressive. Nevertheless, the camera of the iPhone XS remains reliable and a decent choice, considering its age.

The camera of the iPhone XS may not be as remarkable as the newer models such as the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, but it still holds its ground as a good camera for its time. It may not be the best, but it is an improvement from the iPhone X. Considering the age of the phone, it is impressive that the camera continues to perform well. However, if you are seeking a significantly superior camera, opting for the iPhone 11 or 11 Pro would be a wiser decision. Therefore, while the camera of the iPhone XS is decent, it is not exceptional, and there are now better alternatives available.

Software support

The iPhone XS presents an intriguing aspect when it comes to software and longevity. Although it currently enjoys software support, there is uncertainty surrounding its future lifespan. Last year, it became the second phone to lose support, and now it stands as the oldest phone on iOS 17. This situation may raise concerns for those seeking a device that remains supported with software, as it could potentially become outdated in the near future.

With the release of iOS 18, it remains unclear whether the iPhone XS will receive it. While I lack insider information, I would estimate the chances to be 50/50. I sincerely hope it does, but we cannot definitively state so. Unfortunately, this phone cannot endure indefinitely, and we find ourselves in a peculiar phase where it still receives support but may not for much longer.

Performance

In terms of its performance, this device continues to impress. With the Apple A12 bionic chip and 4 GB of RAM, it was the first iPhone to introduce such a significant boost in memory. This increase in RAM greatly contributed to its overall performance, making it a standout feature of the phone. Even when compared to newer models like the iPhone 11s, 12s, and 13s, this device holds up exceptionally well. Although it may not be as speedy as the iPhone 15 or 13, considering its age of approximately 6 years, it still manages to deliver a reliable performance that exceeds expectations.

Battery Life

However, one area where this phone falls behind is its battery life. As expected with any older device running the latest software, it’s not surprising that the battery life isn’t as impressive as it once was. This is to be expected when choosing a phone like the iPhone XS, which is the oldest model compatible with the newest software version. Unfortunately, this means that users may encounter some issues with battery drain. Despite this drawback, the device’s overall performance remains a strong point and something that I value about it.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the iPhone XS remains a viable purchase option; however, it is the least supported iPhone and does not rank as my top recommendation. Given that this phone is approaching the end of its software support, I would advise against recommending it to the majority of individuals.

Instead, I would propose contemplating the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, or even the iPhone 12. These pricier alternatives are more worthwhile investments when compared to the iPhone XS. Please bear in mind that this viewpoint is solely my own, so please interpret it as you see fit.
