The iPhone 13 is almost 2.5 years old from the launch date. Still, people are very interested in this phone should they invest in the iPhone 13 or move forward for a better device? This confusion is pretty much valid for many people.

This phone does not feel outdated in terms of specifications. Let’s say the iPhone 14 is identical to the iPhone 14 with minor upgrades. As well the iPhone 15 follows the same design language but with some improved or major upgrades. The iPhone 13 does make sense to buy in 2024.

So in this blog post, I will share my thoughts and well-explained aspects on which you should buy the iPhone 13 in 2024 or skip.

Kind of similar design to the latest iPhones

In terms of the pure design aesthetic, the iPhone 13 appears to be more similar to the iPhone 15. However, the presence of the notch on the iPhone 15 gives it a slightly more dated look in comparison. On the other hand, the MacBook still retains the notch, so it doesn’t appear as bad. The bezels on the iPhone 15 are thicker than some of the current 15 models, but they are not excessively large.

Overall, the display is still excellent, and even without features like promotion, the OLED display on the iPhone 13 is highly regarded by tech enthusiasts. When it comes to the design, the edges of the iPhone 13 still feature the same 5G antenna, power buttons, silent switch, and volume markers, which are quite similar to previous models. In terms of appearance, it may require a closer look to differentiate between the iPhone 14, 15, or 13, as they share a similar design.

Display

Let’s discuss the OLED display quality here, which is quite bright. However, if you need more brightness outdoors, I suggest opting for the 15 model if it fits your budget. If not, the 14 model is just as bright, although it may struggle a bit in direct sunlight. The only downside is that the brightness doesn’t go as high as some other models.

Apart from that, it offers features like True Tone, Dark Mode, Night Shift, and good accessibility options for adjusting the display to your preference. There is some PWM present, so if you are sensitive to flickering, consider adjusting the settings to reduce eye strain. Overall, despite the older 60Hz display, the phone still performs well due to iOS optimizations.

The notch may be a bit intrusive during reading, but most Apple apps are optimized for it. Some third-party apps may not adjust properly, which can be a bit annoying. The design may not be everyone’s favourite, but with iOS, it remains a solid choice for most users.

Performance and Battery Life

Due to the absence of a major upgrade in the iPhone 13 and its inclusion of the A15 Bionic chip, it remains relevant in today’s market. It excels in various aspects, including app and game opening speeds, as well as day-to-day tasks. Its performance is flawless, and it continues to deliver exceptional results. Additionally, it offers a seamless gaming experience.

The chipset itself is powerful, and its optimization plays a significant role in its outstanding performance. Despite being a slightly older chipset, having been around for two and a half years, the application and game optimization have been executed exceptionally well.

iPhone 13

Consequently, you can expect top-notch performance overall. However, it is worth noting that the phone tends to heat up, making it uncomfortable to hold, even without a case.

Speaking specifically about the iPhone 13, initially, its battery life was not impressive. However, with subsequent updates, such as iOS 17, the battery life of the iPhone 13 started to become more stable. Currently, in the latest version of iOS 17, the battery life seems decent. The battery life of the iPhone 15,14, and 13 is almost the same, with only a difference of 15 to 20 minutes.

If you have an iPhone 13, it can comfortably last for 6 to 6.5 hours, depending on your usage. For an average user, there shouldn’t be any issues with the battery life. However, if you are a hardcore user, you may need to charge the phone multiple times a day.

Software

The iPhone 13 was launched with iOS 15 and is currently running on iOS 17, which has received 2 major updates. However, software updates for the iPhone 13 are still available, indicating that major software updates for the iPhone 13 will also be available in the future. Updates may be available for up to 4 years. So there is excellent longivity fot the iPhone 13 for software support.

An improved Camera

Since the launch of the iPhone 13, Apple has improved its camera department with the iPhone 13 series onwards. Because the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 12 had a weaker camera performance compared to some Android phones. So you can expect that the iPhone 13 has better camera capability than the previous generations of iPhones.

Specswise the iPhone 13 has dual back cameras setup with 12 MP Wide and 12 MP Ultra-Wide. Anybody who does normal photography, this phone will never disappoint you. In terms of portrait capturing, this iPhone does lack when compared to the iPhone 15. The iPhone 15 does better edge detection with the help of software capability. The iPhone 13 lacks in portrait capturing even the iPhone 14 too.

If you observe the colour contrast here, it is evenly balanced, and there is no significant disparity in the iPhone 13. To summarize, when it comes to capturing photos in daylight, I can confidently say that you can fully rely on the iPhone’s camera. Whether it’s the primary camera, ultra-wide camera, or selfie camera, they all perform exceptionally well during daytime photography. The iPhone 13 can shoot videos up to 4k 60, and whatever aspects you have in mind such as exposure control, autofocus stabilization, details, and colours, everything is flawlessly executed. Therefore, for normal videos, I highly recommend the iPhone 13.

When it comes to shooting cinematography videos, many individuals are involved in the process. However, the quality may suffer a bit due to the limitations of 1080p resolution at 30fps. Despite this drawback, the colours, stabilization, and background blur are commendable. Compared to the latest iPhone 15, the video may not appear as sharp. If you plan to shoot and edit videos later on, this factor should be taken into consideration.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the decision to invest in the iPhone 13 in 2024 versus opting for a newer model depends on various factors. Despite being nearly 2.5 years old, the iPhone 13 still holds its ground with competitive specifications and features. Its design, while reminiscent of previous models, remains sleek and functional, with a vibrant OLED display and reliable performance driven by the A15 Bionic chip.

While newer models like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 may offer incremental upgrades, such as improved camera capabilities and design refinements, the iPhone 13 stands strong as a dependable choice for those seeking a reliable smartphone experience. Its camera system, while not on par with the latest iterations, still delivers impressive results for everyday photography and videography tasks.

Furthermore, with ongoing software support expected for several more years, users can expect to receive updates and improvements, ensuring a consistent user experience. Ultimately, for individuals prioritizing performance, display quality, and a well-rounded smartphone experience without necessarily needing the absolute latest features, the iPhone 13 remains a compelling option in 2024. However, for those who prioritize cutting-edge technology and the latest innovations, upgrading to a newer model may be more appropriate.
